Contract Manufacturing 101The need of Contract Manufacturing in today's ecosystem

Contract Manufacturing is a term used to define the working of a company with a manufacturer to produce a predetermined amount of products over a set period. Contract Manufacturing is a vital cog in the engine, especially for startups and businesses with limited resources to reach their manufacturing goals.

A “contract manufacturer” is the company an organization hires to handle all the manufacturing services. They’re typically the ones who oversee the production process and build the product. The manufactured products may be fully completed or partially completed, in which case they maybe then used by the company in its own manufacturing process or to complete their own products.

What are the different types of Contract Manufacturing?
  • The Production of Entire Products
This is when a company outsources the entire production of an item while keeping it under their name. For example, in the electronics industry, a typical mobile phone isn’t actually made fully by the parent company in many cases. Rather, they are made fully or partly by contract manufacturers like FOXCONN.
  • The Production of Parts of a Product
This type of contract manufacturing is popular among computer, automotive, marine, and tech companies, to name a few. These companies are capable of manufacturing a majority of their product, but they need the assistance of a contract manufacturer for the production of certain parts. To illustrate, let’s say a car manufacturer needs to enlist the help of a contract manufacturer for the fabrication of rubber. To do so, they would make an arrangement with a contract manufacturer, who would handle the production of this part. Upon receiving this part from the contract manufacturer, the car manufacturer can finish making their car.
  • Subcontracting for Labor
Don’t have enough employees at your company to meet the production demand for your product? No problem. It is possible to outsource labor, so that you can have an entire team of experts working to build your product. This is a popular option for companies that either do not have the funds to hire a full team at their manufacturing facility or are just not experts in that department. Subcontracting for labor allows these companies to leave the difficult labor to the professionals and meet the high demand for their product.
  • For the Use of Equipment or Manufacturing Facility
Finally, companies would use a contract manufacturer if they do not have access to the required equipment or facility to manufacture products on their own. This is often a more cost-effective option as well.

Why is contracting manufacturing important?

Working with a contract manufacturer helps companies with limited resources still have the ability to create great products. Contracting gives the hiring company access to experts who can oversee the entire manufacturing process, handle quality control, and lead times.

By letting a contract manufacturer handle the production process, the hiring company can reduce costs and simplify their supply chain management by not having to manage the whole manufacturing process and facility. They can then focus their attention on the things they do best like selling, marketing, and customer service.

Our Process

Various Forms of Contract Manufacturing

Even though there’s a lot of forms in the contract manufacturing process depending on the agreement & what you need for your product, there’s still a basic set of steps that most contract manufacturers follow. Here’s our detailed process flow, of which only a combination of services can be opted for based on your requirement.

1

Product Design: Design for manufacturing

Meet with our engineers to explain your requirements in detail & finalize the design for manufacturing.

Product Design: Prototyping

Our Engineers build and test prototypes; they repeat this process until you have a final prototype you’re happy with.

2

Manufacturing: Signing SLA

Sign a manufacturing SLA that would include information regarding the design, manufacturing volume, cost and timelines.

Manufacturing: Test Run

Necessary molds and tools that will be used during the manufacturing process are procured and a test run is performed to establish quality check parameters.

Manufacturing: Production

Final product or components are manufactured, performing quality control testing after every batch.

3

Finished Product: Assembly

We assemble each component and test the final product’s functionality.

Finished Product: Packaging

We package the final product and prepare shipping labels based on where you want the products sent and dispatch the finished products either to your customer or your warehouse.

Finished Product: Sign Off

Post dispatch of the finished products, we hand off all documentation to you, including CAD models, prototypes, and unused molds. Upon mutual agreement, we may keep a secure copy of important files, molds, or tools so you can quickly manufacture another batch of products in the future.

End-to-End Contract Manufacturing

We walk you through all of the steps above. Another benefit of working with an end-to-end approach is that we can begin and end the process at any point in the design-to-production process based on your needs.
So, if you have a great design, we can start in on the prototyping step immediately. Or, if you want to handle assembly and shipping on your own, we will simply manufacture the products and components you need and hand them off to you for final processing. No matter where you are in the manufacturing cycle, an end-to-end approach will get you where you need to go.
